Sheepshead are some of my favorite fish to catch in Tampa Bay in the winter months from January to March. As waters temperatures drop during these months as we get back to back cold fronts, we switch gears from flats fishing to fishing for Sheepshead over rocky bottom areas in Tampa Bay. The Sheepshead spawn normally happens in February each year with these fish invading many areas in Tampa Bay. There are many great areas to target these fish and offer some great light tackle action. You’ll find these finicky eaters along rocky channel edges, artificial reefs and of course, under docks. The bait of choice has been shrimp and fiddler crabs on a size one hook with 20 pound leader. Sheepshead provide some great table fare for those looking to feed the family. The minimum size limit for Sheepshead must be 12 inches and a daily bag limit of 8 per person per day.
